Tribunal Future Act Workshop, Sydney

06/11/2014

The National Native Title Tribunal, in conjunction with King & Wood Mallesons, held a Future Act Workshop on 27 & 28 October 2014 in Sydney. The workshop was well attended by approximately 70 stakeholders, including native title claimants, industry members, legal practitioners and staff from the following organisations:
  • Native Title, Legal Branch, NSW Trade & Investment
  • Division of Resources & Energy NSW Trade & Investment
  • Crown Solicitor’s Office
  • Office of Environment & Heritage
  • Aboriginal Affairs, Department of Education & Communities
  • NSW Minerals Council
  • NTSCORP
  • NSW Aboriginal Land Council
The workshop objectives were to:
   1. Provide a forum which brings stakeholders together and facilitates discussion.
   2. Inform and increase the knowledge of stakeholders in relation to the native title, land rights and cultural heritage environment which operates in NSW.
   4. Provide a forum for the identification and discussion of important areas of practice.

The stated workshop objectives were successfully achieved. The feedback received from workshop participants was very positive and indicated a desire for the Tribunal to organise regular forums to discuss practice issues and various aspects of the native title system.

The Tribunal will liaise with participants in relation to establishing appropriate forums to progress discussions in relation to future act practices in NSW.
