Reporting requirements

The National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT) maintains information in accordance with government requirements and reports regularly on compliance matters and on a range of activities.

Access to Information

Freedom of Information

The NNTT has certain obligations under the Freedom of Information Act 1982  (FOI Act). When the NNTT receives a request under the FOI Act, it may:

  • provide access to documents (as defined in the FOI Act) in its possession whether created in or received by the NNTT
  • protect individual privacy, by allowing a person to have corrected any incomplete, incorrect or dated personal information held by the NNTT (for example, a person's personnel records).

The President (or a person authorised by the President), the Native Title Registrar or the Registrar of the Federal Court of Australia, will often make decisions about FOI applications, depending on the nature of the requested information. Some documents may be exempt from disclosure under the FOI Act. This is also a matter for the President or the relevant officers to decide.

Annual report

Section 133 of the Act requires the President to prepare an annual report that relates to the NNTTs activities during the year. The President’s report is provided to the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia (Court) for inclusion in the Court’s Annual Report.

AI Transparency Statement​

The NNTT (as part of the Federal Court of Australia Listed Entity) is committed to the safe, ethical and responsible use of AI in accordance with the Policy for the responsible use of AI in government.

The Entity has issued an AI transparency statement available on the Federal Court website.

APS employee census

The APS employee census is an annual survey which is used to collect confidential attitude and opinion information from APS employees on important issues in the workplace.

Codes of conduct

Australian Public Service

All APS employees are required to comply with the Code of Conduct which is described in section 13 of the Public Service Act 1999. Compliance with the Code of Conduct includes upholding the APS Values and complying with the APS Employment Principles as described in sections 10 and 10A of the Public Service Act 1999.​

Commonwealth Child Safe Framework

The Commonwealth Child Safe Framework (the Framework) was established in response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. The Framework aims to protect children and young people from the risk of harm and abuse. The Framework sets the minimum standards for Commonwealth entities to ensure a safe environment for children and includes four key requirements around risk assessment and mitigation, training and compliance, and National Principles for child safe organisation.

Public Interest Disclosure Policy

The Public Interest Disclosure Act 2013​ (PID Act) promotes integrity and accountability in the Commonwealth public sector. The PID Act encourages employees, former employees, and others prescribed by the PID Act to disclose wrongdoing by public officials. The PID Act provides protections for people who make disclosures and requires agencies to take appropriate action.
