Rubibi judgment finds Yawuru people the native title holders around Broome

news

The Federal Court has recognised the Yawuru people as the rightful native title holders over land and waters covered by the Rubibi claim, near the popular tourist destination of Broome, Western Australia.

The Yawuru people's efforts to establish native title date back to 1994 when the earliest of several applications were lodged.

Justice Ronald Merkel's decision covers a combination of applications totalling about 8,230sq km and shows the Yawuru have successfully maintained their traditional laws and customs.
