Introduction

The National Native Title Tribunal is pleased to release this collection of information and knowledge resulting from the presentations of invited speakers and the distillation of an Open Forum and working groups addressing associated geospatial issues.

With a gathering of over 50 participants organisationally and geographically from across Australia, and international delegates from New Zealand and Fiji, the workshop was well attended and was considered an overwhelming success. Encouragingly, feedback from the workshop evaluation survey highlighted that more than 80% of respondents had their expectations met or exceeded. We plan to build upon this success with similar regional / state / territory forums in the future.

For further information about geospatial aspects of native title matters, visit the National Native Title Tribunal's web site Maps and Spatial Data.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the organisations shown below on this page for their support of the workshop.

Background Information

The National Native Title Tribunal is hosting the above workshop in partnership with the Intergovernmental Committee on Surveying and Mapping (ICSM), at the 2003 Spatial Sciences Conference in Canberra. The key objective of the workshop is providing a shared understanding of the geospatial characteristics of native title.

This will provide an unique opportunity for participants to learn and share relevant experiences with others involved in native title matters and more importantly identify what is being done (or could be done) to achieve the information requirements of native title. The content will be suitable for all levels.

The program will include:
  • Application of geospatial information in agreement making and mediations (case studies by Tribunal Members)
  • User/Client Requirements (case studies from users such as the pastoral sector, a native title representative body)
  • State/territory government requirements (case studies by Victorian and WA agencies)
  • ANZLIC land administration reform agenda — in the context of native title being one of many layers of interest — (presentation by Grahame Searle WA ANZLIC member)
  • Overview of NNTT’s statutory and custodial roles — assistance, compliance, claim management, mediation, ILUAs, Registers, future act (NNTT presentation).
  • ICSM WG on Native Title — national data model — progress to date and relationship with ICSM harmonised data model
  • Facilitated Open Forum/Working Groups — issues, options, solutions, recommendations — to NNTT, Federal Court, ANZLIC and others.
Submissions and hearings made to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Native Title’s inquiry on the effectiveness and efficiency of the NNTT provide some background to some of the issues likely to be raised.

  • Indigenous bodies — ATSIC, ILC and native title representative bodies
  • ICSM WG members
  • ANZLIC members
