Library services

Specialised library collections are housed within each registry and office of the Tribunal and make up a comprehensive national collection of native title and associated topics. Librarians can be contacted at our Principal, Queensland (Brisbane office) and Western Australia Registries.

Visiting the library
Limited access is available for people wishing to use the library resources and services.  As the library holds sensitive and confidential documents, people from outside the Tribunal can only visit the library when the librarian is available. If you wish to visit the library, please telephone beforehand to ensure a librarian is available to assist.

Library services are available to:

  • parties to native title proceedings or their representatives
  • consultants and researchers engaged by native title parties
  • organisations without their own library services
  • advanced tertiary students
  • other libraries.

Members of the public are encouraged to use their public library to borrow materials from our library collection.

Borrowing items
Requests for interlibrary loans can be made by email, phone or fax.

Consultants, researchers or organisations without a library: Requests to borrow materials can be made by email, mail, or phone to either Principal, Queensland (Brisbane office) or Western Australia Registry library.  You need to be registered as a borrower to be able to use our resources.  To become a borrower, please complete the membership application form prior to requesting items. Contact us for the form.

Organisations with a library: Requests for interlibrary loans can be made through the organisation’s library. Please consult our entry in the Interlending Resource Sharing Directory (ILRS) for our policies. Our NUC code is WNNT. The Tribunal library is a member of Libraries Australia Document Delivery (LADD).

Borrowing periods:  Materials can be borrowed for six weeks. Journal articles may be photocopied and mailed or scanned and emailed to requestor, copyright provisions permitting.

Recalling items: From time to time library staff may need to contact you to recall library materials that you have borrowed.

Overdue items: Overdue notices are sent via email.  The email will request you return or contact NNTT Library staff to discuss the return or renewal of outstanding loans.

Returning borrowed items
Materials borrowed from the library must be returned in an express post envelope to reduce the possibility of items being lost in the mail.
