| National Native Title Tribunal representatives joined Australia’s native title leaders and policy-makers in Canberra early this month for the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) 2010 native title conference.
Tribunal President Graeme Neate said the annual event, held this year from 1 to 3 June, was an opportunity for people involved in all facets of native title to discuss and reflect on progress and issues of concern to them and their organisations.

Claimants, native title holders, people from native title representative bodies, state and federal government departments, the National Native Title Tribunal, politics, academia, the legal profession and anthropologists all attended the conference which this year had the theme ‘People, Place, Power’.
Mr Neate said the conference was an important forum for debate about the direction of native title and Tribunal representatives continued to inform and participate in these discussions.
At this year's conference the President joined Justice John Mansfield and Justice John Dowsett of the Federal Court and lawyer Ann Daniel in a panel discussion ‘Resolving native title claims: Putting the 2009 amendments to work’.
Tribunal Member Daniel O’Dea and regional manager Tom Weaver jointly presented a paper ‘Mediation and case management post-2009’ which focused mainly on Queensland and Western Australian experiences.
Mr Neate said the formal and informal opportunities to meet people involved in native title made the conference an invaluable annual experience.
