WA Native Title Forum participants to develop innovative strategies
| 10/12/2002 |
Native title stakeholders from across Western Australia will meet at a forum in Perth today to develop creative solutions to native title challenges including those thrown up by the High Court's recent Western Australia v Ward decision.
The National Native Title Tribunal, the Office of Native Title - State of Western Australia and the Western Australian Aboriginal Native Title Working Group are co-hosting the WA Native Title Forum to provide people involved in native title claims with the opportunity to work together to develop the best strategies for resolving native title by agreement.
About 70 key representatives have been invited from Indigenous communities and groups, the mining, fishing and pastoral sectors, the State Government and Tribunal.
The forum is chaired by National Native Title Tribunal President, Mr Graeme Neate, and will be opened by Deputy Premier, The Hon. Eric Ripper.
The objectives of the forum are -
- For land holders, governments and native title applicants to sit down together and discuss practical initiatives, ideas and options for managing coexisting rights following the Western Australia v Ward decision, and settling native title applications.
- To promote open discussion among WA groups - their positions and issues - while focussing on solutions rather than problems.
- To explore the full range of native title and other options that are provided through the native title framework. Through these processes opportunities can be created for government, industry, and Indigenous people to work together in partnership to reach agreements.
