Tribunal supports further direct negotiations between state and claimants on Ord stage 2

11/06/1996

Following last week's key agreement between the State of Western Australia and the Miriuwung Gajerrong People in relation to Stage 2 of the Ord River irrigation project, Tribunal Member Fred Chaney has agreed to a further suspension of the Tribunal's mediation process to allow for further direct negotiations between the applicants, the State and the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley.

"The Tribunal supports this important process of direct talks between the State, the Shire and the applicants, and, the fact of the agreement illustrates to us that the process is producing positive results," Mr Chaney said.

Mr Chaney will call a meeting of all parties to the application in September to discuss progress and the future direction of the native title mediation.
