Tribunal praises LGAQ on education campaign

11/05/1999
National Native Title Tribunal President Mr Graeme Neate today congratulated the Local Government Association of Queensland for its education drive on native title issues.

Mr Neate is taking part in a native title seminar in Ipswich today, the first of a series of six regional workshops throughout Queensland.

Mr Neate said the Association had set an example for other peak bodies, providing a way forward for its members.

"A key ingredient in any successful native title mediation is informed discussion of the issues," said Mr Neate.

"These seminars provide the practical information local councils need to address native title in their shires. They will assist councils to negotiate agreements which address development needs and take account of the native title rights of indigenous people."

The Tribunal is taking part in the regional seminar series organised by the Local Government Association of Queensland. The seminars bring together a range of expertise in the native title field and include information on: the role of local government in dealing with native title matters; the role of other parties like the state and native title representative bodies; and how to negotiate native title agreements.

The seminars are being held in: Ipswich 11 May; Cairns 12 May; Rockhampton 14 May; Cloncurry 25 May; Longreach 26 May; and Chinchilla 27 May.

Mr Neate said the Tribunal has had a positive relationship with local government associations, and has published a guide to making agreements with the Australian Local Government Association.
