Pastoralists, local government authorities, Aboriginal people and others with an interest in the Kuyani and Paterson/McKenzie native title applications now have until 25 November 1996 to register their interest with the National Native Title Tribunal and became a party to the mediation of the claims.
The Kuyani application, lodged by Mr Mark McKenzie Snr on 19 September 1995, covers an area of 154,824 sq/km from Peterborough in the south to Parachilna in the north, north of Marree on the west side of the Flinders Range, north-east to Murnpeowie, around the north end of Lake Torrens and west to Turret Range and Andamooka.
The Paterson/McKenzie application, lodged by members of the Paterson, McKenzie, and Wilton families on 19 November 1995, covers 1846 sq/km in the western Flinders Ranges, from the eastern shore of Lake Torrens east to Mount Hack.
Public notices inviting people to become parties to the Kuyani application were issued by the Tribunal on 27 March 1995 and on 1 May 1995 for Paterson/McKenzie. As a result of the number of parties with an interest and the difficulties associated with indentifying them within the normal two-month notification period, a number of people failed to register in time.
The Tribunal, in consultation with the South Australian Farmers' Federation, native title applicants and the South Australian Government, has decided to re-open the notification.
"Existing legal rights are protected by the Native Title Act. These include the rights of pastoralists, local governments, miners and others. Native title applications are lodged in an effort to reach a mediated agreement on the form native title will take over land and waters, while accommodating these existing legal rights," Registrar Patricia Lane said.
Maps of both applications will be placed in local government offices throughout the region and general background information is available from the Tribunal. |
