New native title laws explained in Roma

30/11/1998
Graziers, local government representatives, Aboriginal people and others are invited to attend a free seminar in Roma next week, to explain the new native title laws.

The two day seminar will explain changes to the Federal Native Title Act, and how they affect people involved in native title negotiations. Attendance is free, but people must register with the Tribunal in advance, no later than Thursday 4 December.

The seminar will be held on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 December, from 8.30am to 5pm, at the Overlander Homestead Motel, Warrego Highway, Roma.

Qld State Manager Mr Simon Nish said there have been significant changes to the process with the start of the new Native Title Act on 30 September.

"These seminars are designed to bring people up to speed on the new system, so they can effectively participate in the process," said Mr Nish.

The seminar offers a comprehensive introduction to the amended Native Title Act, and the revised policies and procedures of the National Native Title Tribunal. The Qld Government will also explain their approach to the recent amendments.

The program covers the new role of the Federal Court, the registration test, the role of Native Title Representative Bodies, and changes to the Right to Negotiate process relating to mining, exploration and other developments.

Due to the costs involved, the seminar will only go ahead if a sufficient number of people register. People who would like to attend must register with the Tribunal no later than Thursday 4 December.

For information and registration phone Linda White on (07) 3226 8213 or 1800 640 501.

The same seminar will be held in Cunnamulla on Mon 7 & Tues 8 December.
