Native title update for Magnetic Island

12/10/1998
The National Native Title Tribunal will host two public information sessions at the Arcadia Resort Magnetic Island on Wednesday 14 October, at 10.30am and 7.00pm.

Tribunal Member Geoff Clark said the purpose of the meetings was to provide an update to residents on the progress of the Wulgurukaba applications since the Tribunal's last visit to the island in July, and to explain the next steps in the process.

Mr Clark will also outline some of the changes under the amended Native Title Act, which came into effect on 30 September.

Mr Clark will explain the new registration test for native title applicants and outline the process for people who wish to become a party to the proceedings and take part in mediation.

The Wulgurukaba applications - which cover the national park and parcels of unallocated state land on the island - moved into public notification last month. People with a direct interest in the area included in the applications have until 23 November to apply to become a party.
