Native title seminar in Torres Strait

19/11/1998

Torres Strait residents are invited to attend a seminar on Thursday Island run by the National Native Title Tribunal on 10 - 11 December. Attendance is open to all people at no cost, but people must register with the Tribunal in advance no later than Friday 4 December.

The two day seminar will explain changes to the Federal Native Title Act, and how they affect people involved in native title negotiations.

The Torres Strait seminar - one of eight being held throughout Qld - will take place on Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 December, from 8.30am to 5pm, at the Port Kennedy Community Hall, Douglas Street, Thursday Island.

Far North Qld Regional Coordinator Mr Jim Brooks said there have been significant changes to the process with the start of the new Native Title Act on 30 September.

"These seminars are an opportunity for all people involved in native title negotiations to learn how the new system works, so they can effectively participate in the process," said Mr Brooks.

The seminars offer a comprehensive introduction to the amended Native Title Act, and the revised policies and procedures of the National Native Title Tribunal. The Qld Government will also explain their approach to the recent amendments.

The program covers the new role of the Federal Court, the registration test, the role of Native Title Representative Bodies, and the new provisions in the Act for Indigenous Land Use Agreements. A Qld Government historian will also discuss archival materials available to native title claimants when preparing reports about their connection to country.

Due to the costs involved, the seminar will only go ahead if a sufficient number of people register. People who would like to attend must register with the Tribunal no later than Friday 5 December. If enough registrations have not been received by 5 December, the seminar will be cancelled.
