The progress of native title legislation in Australia is reviewed by National Native Title Tribunal President Graeme Neate in the Australian Law Reform Commission’s first Reform publication for 2009, launched in Sydney today.
Native title is the focus for all articles in this edition of Reform, Native title 2009 Issue 93.
In his article “Native title: Looking forward through the past”, Mr Neate examines the processes, outcomes and achievements of native title legislation since it began operating in 1994.
The President’s article is one of 17 by people who play an important role in Australia’s native title system.
Attorney-General Robert McClelland, Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin, the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma, Australia’s Chief Justice and former Tribunal President Robert French, Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) President Professor David Weisbrot and Yorta Yorta woman Monica Morgan are among the contributors.
The Commission publishes Reform twice a year and is available free online: http://www.alrc.gov.au/reform/summaries/
