Native Title Forum: 1-3 August, Brisbane

Since the 1998 amendments to the Native Title Act, Indigenous Land Use Agreements are increasingly being used to determine the use and management of land between native title holders and others - how effective have they been and what are future issues emerging from current practice?

Over 200 delegates from a wide range of sectors and organisations involved in native agreement making including native title representative bodies, state, local and federal governments, farming/fishing industry, Federal Court, legal representatives, and anthropologists will be taking part in a Forum at the Customs House in Brisbane on from 1-3 August. Delegates will hear about practical experiences and case studies from project proponents and native title holders and Members of the Native Title Tribunal.

The Attorney General, the Hon Daryl Williams MP QC will present the Forum's opening address.

Senator Jeannie Ferris, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Native Title and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Land Fund will speak on the issues that arose during the joint committee's inquiry into ILUAs. The Joint Committee has concluded its hearings and is expected to hand down its report by the end of the year.
