Mildura Rural City Council, Latji Latji People sign native title agreement

30/07/2003
After two years of negotiations, the Mildura Rural City Council and the Latji Latji People have signed a native title agreement that will see benefits flow to the whole community around Mildura in north-west Victoria.

At a ceremony in Mildura today, attended by Premier Mr Steve Bracks, representatives of the Mildura Rural City Council and the Latji Latji and Wergaia native title group signed an indigenous land use agreement (ILUA) that gives the traditional owners' consent to the $65 million Mildura Marina project.

The agreement gives the Latji Latji access to employment and training opportunities during the development of the marina, a shop in the marina site, space for a cultural display in the Alfred Deakin Centre in Mildura and formal acknowledgement of Latji Latji as traditional owners at council events and signage throughout Latji Latji country.

National Native Title Tribunal member Professor Douglas Williamson, who assisted in the negotiation of the agreement, congratulated the parties for the goodwill they had shown throughout the process.

'There has been strong leadership from all the people involved throughout these negotiations,' Professor Williamson said. 'Today's signing shows that when local government and traditional owners work in partnership, they can achieve agreements that lead to significant benefits for an entire region.'
