Justice Paul Finn has recognised the Torres Strait Regional Sea Claim Group’s non-exclusive native title rights over nearly 38,000sq km of sea between Cape York Peninsula and Papua New Guinea at a Federal Court hearing in Cairns.

The Tribunal’s Victoria/Tasmania Registry has moved to the Commonwealth Law Courts building in Melbourne. The registry is now operating from Level 6 in the Owen Dixon Commonwealth Law Courts Building, at 305 Williams Street, Melbourne.

The Tableland Yidinji People and Tablelands Regional Council signed an indigenous land use agreement (ILUA) on 24 April, in Atherton, that protects Aboriginal cultural heritage and establishes how consultation for development will progress.

The Tribunal has released the fourth in a continuing series of six monthly status reports on Australia’s native title system. The latest report shows a slight increase in the rate of claim resolution and also in the number of claims lodged.
